Having seen many pretenders to the ProV1 throne come and go, it was easy to be sceptical about the TaylorMade TP Black ball's claims.

However for once the ball has lived up to the hype. The TP Black is a little firmer feeling than the TP Red and it performs very well in all areas.

Distance is good and the feel on and around the greens was very similar to the ProV1, which is what it is lined up against.

The big plus for us was that the cover of the TaylorMade TP Black was as durable as the ProV1, which is where a lot of other balls have fallen down.

Definitely an alternative, but better than - well, that will be down to your personal preference.

The TaylorMade TP Black ball is very soft and great for putting and around the green. However, when you catch it with a high spin wedge like the Titleist Vokey design, it scratches badly. Don’t expect to get through a round with any less than 3-4 of these balls. Overall, great for feel but poor for durability.
