The relaunch of the Big Bertha brand by Callaway has centred on a "new distance generation" of golf clubs and they have now brought the Callaway Big Bertha Hybrid into the fold promising a fast, forgiving and adjustable long distance hybrid.

The Big Bertha is Callaway's first adjustable hybrid and represents a marriage of an adjustable the hosel with a cup face technology for speed.

Callaway Big Bertha Hybrid

Keen followers of Callaway will be familiar with the forged cup face technology found in previous generation hybrids such as the X2 Hot and the ball speed gains it provides.

This technology centres around a thin and light Speed Frame Face that ensures ball speed is maximised across the whole face. This is far from a simple re-branding of technology though. The Big Bertha Hybrid is designed to be more playable for the average golfer so the configuration of the head has changed from previous generations of Callaway hybrids.

The head has been made slightly larger with a deeper footprint from front to back and some weight has been moved from the front of the head to the back to increase the MOI and create a low centre of gravity.

The result is a hybrid that will get the ball in the air more easily and produce more efficient trajectories for average players in order to gain extra distance.

Callaway Big Bertha Hybrid

The most notable change in the Big Bertha is the introduction of adjustablity to a Callaway hybrid for the first time to help golfers successfully integrate hybrids into the bag.

The technology used is the familiar Optifit system used in Callaway's drivers and fairway woods, which gives the option of four degrees of loft and for each of those lofts two options of lie angle. Couple this with the fact that the Big Bertha hybrid is offered in a 3 through to a 7 hybrid and you can see that golfers should be able to dial in the hybrid to complement their irons and eradicate any awkward gaps.

Alan Hocknell, Head of Research and Development at Callaway, sums up the Big Bertha Hybrid offering:

Overall extra distance from the cup face, more MOI for forgiveness and the ability to use adjustability in the club to dial in the club to fit exactly into your bag.
