What do you get if you mix Dustin Johnson, Martin Laird, one of the best links courses in the world and a giant weather machine?

Answer: an Adidas Golf event.

Adidas Weather Machine

Dozens gathered last night on the first fairway at North Berwick's famed West Links to see the launch of Adidas' new GORE-TEX outwear.

"Weather The Storm" was the tagline used by adidas to launch the new products, launching the week of The Open Championship which has seen its share of stormy weather in recent years. In the bags of almost all adidas Golf players this week, the new GORE-TEX rain suits have been developed to withstand bad weather without sacrificing comfort, flexibility or range of motion.

So how do you test rain gear? Well, the folks at adidas built a giant weather machine on the fairway and challenged Dustin Johnson and Martin Laird to hit shots in conditions ranging from blustery through to the perfect storm.

For the first four shots, the conditions were determined by a spin of a gameshow style ‘weather wheel’ and for the final, Facebook fans determined just how tough the weather should be via an online vote.

We're not sure Dustin and Martin knew what they were getting themselves in for. Both struggled with the wind, rain and distance involved in the challenge. Whilst the GORE-TEX raingear kept them dry and swinging free, the evening wind combined with the weather machine forced both men to hit 2 or 3 irons towards the first green.

Johnson said: “I know this part of the world is renowned for bad weather, but that was something else! It was great fun taking on Martin in his own back yard, and having faced these conditions we're now fully prepared for whatever the weather throws at us this week.”

Dustin ultimately won in a playoff, with adidas donating £5,000 on his behalf to East Lothian Special Needs Play Group.

As for the adidas GORE-TEX raingear, you will perhaps see it in action this week at Muirfield, otherwise it will be available from August in four different colours, carrying an RRP of £224.99 for the jacket and £174.99 for the trousers.
