The Ping G410 fairway has undergone a makeover based on tour feedback to create an easier to launch wood with less spin.

Ping G410 Fairway Wood

Apparently Ping's tour players found the previous G400 fairway created too much spin, so the designers lowered the CG by 1.5mm (0.06 inches).

This gets the CG aligned closer to the face and sole and on a perpendicular line going through the face from the back of the head.

The adjustable hosel has also been improved, with an increase in loft range from +/- 1° to +/- 1.5°, plus three flat lie options too.

Ping G410 Fairway Lofts

This is a completely new design of hosel, so you won't be able to use your current Ping fairway adjustable shaft unless you swap over the attachment.

Other than the CG position, the rest of the G410 fairway is pretty much as you were. The 171cc stainless steel head has a stronger forged maraging steel face to maximise ball speeds.

There is also a high-density Tungsten weight in the back of the sole to increase the MOI and get that CG position low and back.

Ping G410 Fairway Wood

Compared to the G400 the G410 fairway has had a bit of nip and tuck around the side and has a slightly less rounded rear.

The Turbulators are back bigger than ever before to aid the aerodynamics. Ping claim they are also there to help with ball alignment at address, and I see what they are saying, but it is not my favourite alignment device around.

The colour has also been lightened from black to a sort of steel grey, but you only really notice this when you put it against the previous model, as otherwise it still looks pretty dark.

In the SFT version of the fairway, this weight is more towards the heel, and combined with a larger 188cc head and 1.5° weaker lofts, the SFT should create enough draw bias to keep you straight.

There is also a low spin LST version of the G410 fairway, that aims to drop spin and launch the ball higher so it stops quicker on the green.

It provides similar launch conditions to the Stretch version of the G400 fairway, but in a head that is 11% smaller at 159cc.

Compared to the G400 Stretch, Ping say that the G410 LST fairway should launch the ball 1° higher with 300 rpm less spin, so it could be an option from the fairway for high speed players.

Ping G410 Fairway Verdict

Comparing the G410 fairway to the previous G400 fairway on GC2, the numbers showed how this tour influence has come through into the design. Whilst the ball speed was up, it was the lower launch of the G410 that was affecting the distance as the ball was in the air for less time.

However using the hosel to adjust the loft up 1° gained that distance back as the launch angle increased by around 1.5° to the same as the G400. So this shows how using adjustability to change launch conditions can improve performance and is one of the reasons Ping has introduced it.

Clearly, if you are a higher swing speed player than my paltry 100mph driver swing speed, then the G410 might be a better alternative to G400, as you will have the speed to generate the launch.

The rest of us might have to use the hosel or go up a head loft to get the same results, or stick with the G400.

Ping G410 Fairway Wood

In terms of looks and feel, like it's predecessor, the G410 fairway is quite functional. It sounds a little on the hollow side, but is pretty forgiving. The sole is quite a square design, which means it sits close to the ground and is therefore very easy to launch.

It does everything perfectly well, but for the same money you can get fairways that might perform a touch better and appeal to your heart as well as your head.
