Tiger Woods completed the greatest comeback story in the history of golf this April when he won The Masters for a fifth time, his fifteenth major in an extraordinary career.
For over two decades, golfers have been admiring Tiger’s golf swing and ball striking. Now, you can get one step closer to experiencing what it actually feels like to be the best iron player in the world.
That is because TaylorMade have announced the release of P-7TW, a premium player’s iron set which has been designed and crafted in collaboration with Woods himself.
The irons combine the simple precision of a forged muscle back iron with TaylorMade’s Milled Grind sole, first seen in their wedges, as well as tungsten weighting requested by Tiger for flight control and a unique feel.
Performance Through Precision
Tiger is well known as being of the most meticulous golfers when it comes to his equipment and its detail, so creating an iron which looked and performed to his exact specifications was certainly going to be a challenge for TaylorMade.
TaylorMade's R&D team researched Tiger’s previous design preferences, with the help of his trusted equipment aficionado Mike Taylor, before spending months testing and designing. A staggering nine iterations later, they finally had a set of irons which everyone was happy with.
The P-7TW irons are not crafted as a set but rather each head is individually and precisely engineered to ensure that they are of the highest quality. The irons are built with an emphasis on ‘precise trajectory control, incredible workability and smooth turf interaction’.
Each of the irons uses many of the same design elements that Tiger himself had in the bag during his incredible fifth Masters victory, such as blade lengths, sole geometry, score lines and tungsten weighting. I’m sure plenty of you will have, at some point, attempted to emulate Tiger out on the golf course (club twirlers – I’m looking at you…) but now you can take one step closer.
TaylorMade Thumbprint: Milled Grind Soles
We mentioned earlier that Tiger can be very particular when testing out sets of irons, which is demonstrated by the fact that he used to require up to eight copies of the same handmade iron in order to find the one that he was happy with.
Now, TaylorMade can use the same machining process used in their Milled Grind and Hi-Toe wedges to give their irons fully milled soles for the first time in the company’s history. This aims to eliminate variations or inconsistencies from head-to-head or set-to-set.
Tungsten Weighting
Tungsten in club heads is usually added to create a certain CG location, but Tiger’s irons use very precise amounts right behind the sweet spot to more directly influence feel aswell as performance. TaylorMade says the positioning of the tungsten helps to deliver a ‘unique blend of feel, flight and control’.
A Premium Experience
Clearly these are not your average set of irons, and that is reflected in the whole experience of receiving them before you even hit a shot. TaylorMade are promising a ‘premium unboxing experience’ where special materials have been used to ensure that the P-7TW box unveils the irons and pays tribute to the collaboration between themselves and Tiger Woods at the same time.
Available from May 1st, the premium design and performance of the irons is reflected in the RRP of £1899. For that you get 7 irons (3-PW) equipped with True Temper Dynamic Golf S400 Tour shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord grips. If you're looking for something slightly different, you can use TaylorMade's custom program to alter the shafts and grips to your liking.
For some, these may seem a clever marketing ploy by TaylorMade as there will be golfers who buy these just to say that they are a TW iron user. But if you're a true Tiger Woods fanatic and looking for a premium players iron which have benefitted from all of TaylorMade's best technologies, it might be worth the price tag to walk the fairways with the same weapons as one of the world's greatest sporting icons.
We certainly won't think any worse of you.
