Callaway's X-Hot range of woods and irons mark the start of a new chapter in the life of Callaway since Chip Brewer arrived as Chief Executive from Adams Golf.
Dr Alan Hocknell is in charge of the R&D team at Callaway and we met up with him to find out the philosophy behind the Callaway X-Hot range.
One of the key products in the range is the Callaway X-Hot fairway wood that uses a new cup face design to increase ball speed and forgiveness. Distance fairways are becoming a key battleground in the golf bag and Alan says that they did a lot of research and focussed on what golfers needed through player testing with this range, rather than following the crowd or looking at numbers.
The other key product is the Callaway X-Hot irons and for this model, Callaway looked back at models that have been really popular in the past and recreated some of the key features such as a deep 360 degree undercut cavity that now features in the X-Hot irons.
It was a fascinating conversation with Alan, who is a classic Brit abroad in California and a very keen golfer too. With the new impetus from Brewer's arrival, it will be very interesting to see what Callaway come up with in the next year or two as the R&D are unleashed to deliver market changing products.
