When you are trying to make a club forgiving, you would normally make it larger. However that brings in a trade off between size and MOI due to the weight of the crown.
The Big Bertha Fusion fairway uses the same principles as the Callaway Big Bertha Fusion Driver we reviewed by using a very light, yet strong Triaxial Carbon crown to get around this problem.
The Triaxial Crown is 78% lighter than a 26g steel crown at just 5.8g and is placed on top of a steel body to enable Callaway to move the saved weight elsewhere in the sole of the head to maximise the MOI.
This enables Callaway to draw back the rear of the head to create that deep CG for more forgiveness and a higher launch with an MOI that is 19% higher than the Callaway XR 16 fairway.
The shape is also more aerodynamic with a cambered sole to make it playable from any lie. The crown features the same Speed Step as the XR 16 to help increase club head speed and give the Big Bertha Fusion fairway a distinctive look at address.
The head features the usual Callaway Hyper Speed Face Cup that wraps around the front to maximise ball speeds from the centre and off-centre hits.
There is a choice of UST Recoil and Mitsubishi Diamana Red shafts as standard in slightly shorter shaft lengths than usual to help make the club more forgiving as you will be more likely to hit the centre of the club face.
The Big Bertha Fusion fairway comes in three heads of a 15º 3-wood, 18º 5-wood and 21º 7 wood.
