Adidas claim that all golfers, professionals and amateurs alike, all want the same thing from their golf shoes: a high-performance spiked shoe that is lightweight and extremely comfortable. I suppose it's hard to disagree with the footwear giant on this one.
The result of chasing this ultimate goal is Adidas Golf's first shoe offering for 2021 - the ZG21, which is said to offer golfers of all skill levels a high-performance spiked shoe that’s lightweight with zero compromises.
The ZG21 is said to be the 'new era of performance' for golf footwear and a result of nearly two years of product development, multiple prototypes, configurations, and infusing the latest technologies to get everything right.
Before we get into the specific technologies that make up the ZG21, it's worth mentioning the main headline of the new shoe: Adidas' lightest ever spiked shoes to feature boost cushioning. It’s up to 20 percent lighter than comparable spiked models previously in their range and significantly lighter than many competitor models - Adidas haven't stated which competitor models however...
"“ZG21 is truly a breakthrough feat in spiked performance. We were able to combine the latest and greatest materials, innovations, and manufacturing processes without sacrificing anything. It changes the game for those who love spiked footwear.”
Masun Denison, Global Footwear Director, adidas Golf.
The four main technologies are broken down into the following categories:
This cushioning is 40 percent lighter than any EVA foam in the golf market whilst also providing shock absorption and quick recovery for the foot, to offer stability throughout the golf swing. This technology has been used by Adidas in other sport categories like basketball and tennis.
This is then coupled with boost cushioning (which we have loved at Golfalot in recent years - especially in the Adidas Tour360 Primeknit Shoes) and it gives players lightweight comfort and stability with every swing and step.
This is the lightweight and waterproof (one-year warranty) four-layer upper that combines innovative textiles and polyurethane films for serious protection for your feet in any conditions.
Ultra-light Stability Fin
The ZG21 features a completely new lightweight and durable TPU insert, created in the lateral sidewall that offers increased lateral stability and a locked-in feel throughout the swing.
The new outsole on the shoe has been inspired by heat-map studies and running from heel to toe. In Adidas' research, they target these areas and place the maximum amount of traction where it’s needed most.
The outsole also features six strategically placed cleats and a new crescent moon-shaped lug to optimise grip and performance.
Dustin Johnson, 24-time PGA Tour winner, 2020 Masters Champion and No. 1 Player in the World also commented on the ZG21:
“I couldn’t believe how light these were when I put them on. I’ve worn adidas shoes my entire career and it’s amazing how the team was able to reduce the weight so much while still keeping the great comfort, traction and stability. Players of all skill levels will benefit from what ZG21 has to offer when they put them on and head to the course.”
ZG21 is available in four models: men’s laced, men’s and women’s BOA, and a simplified laced offering for junior golfers.
The two BOA models feature the new BOA Fit System, a ‘Y’-strap design that’s a first in the sport and provides an even higher level of performance. The configuration wraps around the foot, creating a secure fit over the instep and provides flexibility and freedom in the toe box.
The men’s ZG21 BOA is also the first golf shoe on the market to feature Li2 – a sleek, low-profile dial platform that modulates tension when and where needed with enhanced speed and effortless execution.
All ZG21 models will be available exclusively on adidas.com and the adidas app starting now and will be available worldwide at selected retailer partners worldwide beginning February 1, 2021.
