TaylorMade r5 Dual TP Driver

The TaylorMade r5 Dual TP driver combines the extreme size and forgiveness of TaylorMade's r5 Dual titanium driver with TaylorMade Launch Control (TLC), a revolutionary technology that gives players the power to change the clubhead's centre of gravity (CG) location to promote different types of trajectories. The TaylorMade r5 Dual TP incorporates two TLC ports positioned in the back of the clubhead at the heel and the toe. Installing TLC cartridges of differing weights in the TLC ports allows the player to move the clubhead's CG toward either the toe or heel to promote varying degrees of draw bias and fade bias, or to promote a neutral, or straight ball flight. TaylorMade engineers positioned the r5 Dual TP's TLC ports strategically low and at the clubhead's perimeter, where they help to pull the CG deeper into the clubhead and away from the face, making it easier to launch the ball on a high, strong, long-carrying ball flight. At the same time the weight and position of the TLC ports and cartridges significantly increases the r5 Dual TP's moment of inertia (MOI), resulting in increased forgiveness on mis-hits.

Included with the r5 Dual TP are six TLC cartridges: a 2-gram cartridge, a 4-gram cartridge, two 6-gram cartridges, an 8-gram cartridge and a 10-gram cartridge. Also included with the r5 Dual TP is a TLC wrench, red carrying case for the wrench and cartridges, and a state-of-the-art head cover with secure magnetic seal. At 450 cubic centimetres, the r5 Dual TP clubhead is exceptionally large. This large-sized clubhead is made possible by TaylorMade's Super-Thin Wall (STW) casting technology, which allows for clubhead walls that are 20% thinner than those of a typical titanium wood. The r5 Dual TP is engineered with a square clubface alignment, in keeping with the preferences of skilled players, for whom the TaylorMade's TP line of equipment is intended. The stock TP shaft is the Mitsubishi Diamana 83 with .335" tip diameter, which is used by many top tour pros. It is also available with two custom shaft alternatives, Fujikura Speeder 757 and Fujikura SIX, both of which are used on tour.

The r5 Dual TP is equipped with TaylorMade's TGT grip, which is formulated from a special high-traction compound to afford a secure hold on the club in all types of weather. Emblazoned onto the grip's surface is an intelligent finger-placement guide to help the player achieve a better grip, promoting a more efficient clubhead release and clubface alignment at impact, thereby achieving increased distance and accuracy.

What Golfalot Says

We already liked the TaylorMade R5 Dual so we were going to have to be impressed with the R5 Dual TP version to justify the extra price tag and we weren't disappointed. TaylorMade R5 Dual TP has all the great performance of the normal Type N version, but with two big changes. Firstly the two weights in the back of the TaylorMade R5 Dual TP can be inter-changed like those on the R7 Quad. This enables you to pre-set the club for a fade or a draw or to hit it higher or lower. Changing the weights in this way did seem to have the desired effect although a determined slice sling will still go right on the hook setting and vice versa. The second big change is the shaft in the TaylorMade R5 Dual TP. This is a much better quality shaft than in the normal R5 Dual and if gives much better feel and performance. A very good driver just got better and we feel the R5 Dual TP worth the upgrade on the normal version, even if the price is a bit steeper.

I tried this TaylorMade R5 Dual TP at a recent demo day and thought very highly of it. I had only tried the older R5 driver a few times, but this is a definite improvement on what was already a good driver. The new TaylorMade R5 Dual TP has just the two weights at the back and more attractive clubhead in general. It launched the ball at a really good, fairly high trajectory that really arched when hit well. The new TaylorMade R5 Duel TP shafts compared to the old R5 ones felt much more solid and performed better. An expensive club, but the TaylorMade R5 Duel TP is worth every penny to a player who benefits.

Picked up the TaylorMade r5 Dual TP driver for a bargain £130.00 (03/08). Tried the r7s including SuperQuad but wasn't inspired until I tried this r5. Lovely looking club that really inspires confidence at address and made a serious difference on the scope in the nets at Nevada Bob's... another 30 yards carry with a draw. Strangely the cartridge weights were set up for exactly that, which suits me just fine for now but it’s no hassle to change them to neutral when necessary. Confusingly identified with a Type N (Neutral) badge between the cartridges but that’s exactly as shown on the TM website.
