The Callaway uPro golf GPS Rangefinder does everything you would expect of a standard GPS and more. The basic mode provides all the relevant information clearly and quickly and the hazards are shown with a front and carry yardage which is crucial. Basic mode is free for all courses when you buy the uPro and therefore there are no subscription charges to pay ever.
The distance measuring function is very simple to use so you can note down carry distances for all your clubs or those 300+ yard drivers, although you will have to manually write them down if you want to work out averages.
However it is in Pro Mode that the uPro really sets itself apart. The video flyovers are perfect if you are playing a course for the first time as they give you a much better overview of each new hole as you play it than a 2D map can. These can be switched off if you know the course and then the Any Point measuring really helps with any course that you know well. Not only can it work out lay-up yardages very easily, but you can also move the cursor around the screen to get an exact yardage to any point on the green. Ideal if you know where the flag is likely to be on the green.
The only downside is that for the Pro Mode courses you have to buy credits to redeem online but this is a straightforward process. In fact downloading any courses is so simple as all you need to do is plug the uPro into any computer via the USB cable and then you can access your online account area and download new courses. The online area is simple to use and the request a course facility allows you to ask Callaway to map a particular course they may not already have. You have to check back in to see when this is done, so some form of notification by email or text would be good.
The uPro device is really light and the size of a small mobile phone so you can either attach it to your bag or slip it in your pocket without it affecting your swing. The screen works well even in bright sunlight and the navigation and buttons are slick and easy to use. Our only gripe was having to switch off the machine completely in order to change course. The rechargeable battery life is very good and you can usually get 3-4 rounds out on a single charge.
Overall the Callaway uPro is hard to fault and with the basic course information available free when you buy the device there is no long term financial commitment involved.
