Who? 28 year-old Australian Cameron Smith.
What? The 2022 Players Championship, his fifth PGA Tour win.
Where? TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
How? After a severely rain-disrupted week, Cam Smith edged out Anirban Lahiri to win by one shot in a Monday finish in Florida, despite visiting the water on his 72nd hole and having to scramble to save bogey. Smith had started the final round two strokes behind, but birdied five of his six holes to charge into the lead before faltering around the turn with three consecutive bogeys, then fighting back with four more birdies on the bounce. A brilliant birdie on the par 3 17th gave him a three stroke advantage heading to the final hole, but after laying up into the water the Australian was forced to show his stellar short game to post -13 and eventually win by one shot when Lahiri was only able to make par.
