Scotty Cameron is as famous for its putter designs as it is for the Tour players who use them - over the last decade we have seen the likes of Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas tuck away plenty of victories using different variants of the Scotty putters. Oh, and Tiger Woods' Newport 2 has served him pretty well over the years too...
This year Scotty Cameron has decided to honour the success of Justin Thomas by introducing a limited-release model of the Phantom X 5.5 Putter that he has used to win 12 of his 13 PGA Tour titles, including the 2017 PGA Championship.
Each putter incorporates the custom setup created by Scotty himself for JT when they developed the model in the summer of 2016, with a high-MOI wingback style along with a welded slant neck. This better suits more of an arced putter stroke that would commonly suit a blade style, despite the bigger head shape.
There's also a new 'Circle JT' emblem engraved on the heel of the putter face, as well as Thomas' signature on the aluminium sole plate to complete the 'Inspired by' styling.
“This was an extremely cool project for me to work on with Scotty. When I first saw the 5.5, I immediately noticed how nicely it sits down on the green. The neck just makes it sit so square. In the beginning, I was only thinking it would give me something different to look at for a couple weeks – yet here I am - four-something years later and still using it. So, I guess it’s worked out pretty well.”
Other technologies included within the Phantom X 5.5 include a multi-material head which is milled from solid 300 stainless steel which extends through the wings, whilst a 6061 aircraft aluminium sole plate allows for weight to be better distributed through the head in order to increase MOI and stability.
The putter comes in at 34.5 inches with a 10-gram customisable stainless steel heel and toe weights, which Scotty says promotes proper balance and increased stability throughout the stroke.
Each putter features a raw finish for a radiant, yet glare-resistant appearance, along with Scotty's signature three red dot pattern in the back cavity.
The Phantom X 5.5 comes complete with a new Pistolero Plus grip in cement grey with black letter, an embroidered Inspired by Justin Thomas headcover and Scotty Cameron Seven-Point Crown shaft.
Just 2,020 of these putters will be available for purchase, from September 22nd, at an SRP of £849.
