Mizuno believe in forged golf clubs. Forging brings better feel and greater control and where is this more important than in your wedge?
The MP-T5 forged wedge brings these benefits into the short game with Mizuno's Grain Flow forging process delivering the best feel and workability in the area that matters most - the scoring zone.
Wedges are specific to every player and the trend in the marketplace in recent times has been to offer more bounce and loft options to ensure that not only the professionals have wedges dialled into their individual games.
Mizuno have addressed this by offering the T5 wedge in every loft at one degree intervals from 49° to 62°. Together with multiple bounce options throughout the loft range and two sole grinds the MP-T5 boasts 50 combinations to meet the demands of all types of player.
Mizuno's Senior Engineer Chris Voshall explains:
The challenge with the MP-T5 was to find a way to increase spin. It came down to square-ness of hit, which is achieved differently depending on your technique. So we added a huge variation of bounce and loft options.
All this choice may lead to some confusion but Mizuno have kept the process of picking a wedge as simple as possible. Golfers just need to pick their preferred loft and bounce to match their game and the courses they play and the resulting clubs will have the grooves and grinds to suit those choices.
The lower lofted wedges from 49° to 53° have less aggressive grinds with narrow, deeper grooves that give better control on fuller shots into the green from the fairway or rough.
In the higher lofted models from 54° to 62°, the grooves are wider and shallower to perform optimally on shots around the green where players open the face of the club.
Traditionally bounce has been considered in terms of course conditions with a lower bounce deemed suited to firm courses with tight lies and higher bounce recommended for softer layouts.
However, suitable bounce on a wedge also depends on the technique of the player so Mizuno have introduced
a range of bounce options, from 4° to 15° across the various lofts to ensure that each player can find a loft suited to their approach.
The bounce is complemented by two different grind options that further enhance the performance of the club. The low bounce grind is designed to make low bounce options play even lower to the ground, whilst the grind on the higher bounce wedges provides more sole area to ensure it doesn't dig into the ground.
The MP-T5 grinds were heavily influenced by Luke Donald's own personal grind which he prefers with a lot of material ground off the back edge of the heel to aid performance with a little off the toe to make the wedge look how he likes behind the ball.
The MP-T5 wedges are available in two finishes, classic White Satin and a lush Black IP plate that is designed to maintain its looks over time and will not rust.
