The philosophy behind Cobra's Fly-Z range (pronounced Fly-Zee) is to give players clubs they can adjust, tune and customise, allowing them to find the right club for their swings.
With the Fly-Z+, Fly-Z and Fly-Z XL drivers Cobra have brought this philosophy to life with a range of clubs that share common performance technologies, providing the distance all golfers are looking for, but with specific characteristics to fit the games of different players.
Speed Channel Face
All the drivers in the Fly-Z range feature Cobra's new Speed Channel Face technology, designed to increase ball speeds across the face for greater distance.
This is achieved through creating an engineered trench surrounding the face of the club that minimises face thickness to help maintain ball speeds across a wider area of the face.
Forged E9 Zone Face Weighting
The Fly-Z driver range also sees the next generation of the Cobra E9 forged face. By removing weight from key areas across the face and the hosel the Cobra engineers have been able to increase the size of the sweet spot to generate more distance and consistency on off centre impacts.
Crown Zone Weighting
As well as moving the weight savings from the face, Cobra's Crown Zone Weighting takes weight from the crown and repositions it down and back in the head to deliver a centre of gravity (CG) that is low and deep for extreme forgiveness on off-centre strikes and to help maintain distance from impacts right across the face.
Cobra Fly-Z+ Driver
The Cobra Fly-Z+ is an ultra-low CG driver that combines with Cobra's innovative FlipZone technology to provide two different flight paths from one head.
The Fly-Z+ driver is a multi-material construction with a combination of a titanium 6-4 body and carbon fibre crown and sole pieces. This has allowed the engineers to maximise the discretionary weight positioned low in the head to increase both forgiveness and distance. The low CG promotes faster ball speeds, lower spin and optimal launch angles dependent on the front or back position of the FlipZone.
FlipZone
The FlipZone is Cobra's first front-to-back CG adjustable technology. A 15-gram weight on the sole of the club can be set toward the front or back of the head creating either a low forward, or a low back CG.
The performance characteristics differ in the two weight settings, allowing golfers to adjust to what is the longest and straightest for them. The front CG position provides a mid-launch angle with ultra-low spin and a penetrating ball flight with more roll for maximum distance. The back CG position delivers a mid-launch angle with 400 RPM’s of additional spin, resulting in a higher ball flight for maximum distance with more carry.
Ryder Cup Star and Cobra Tour Player Rickie Fowler explains the benefits of he Fly-Z+ for his game:
I’m really excited about the new Fly-Z+ driver. In our early prototype testing I saw the positive effects the two settings could have on ball flight. For me, the front CG setting yielded the ball flight I want to see on the course. The adjustable loft setting Cobra introduced last year was a huge advantage to my game, but now adding this new Zone Weighting to fine tune ball flight is really game-changing.
The Fly-Z+ driver also features Cobra's proven MyFly8 and SmartPad adjustability, functionality that gives multiple lofts from 8.5°to 11.5° for different trajectory options.
Players picking the Fly-Z+ can also choose from five colours - black, white, blue, orange and red - as well as a range of premium shafts at no extra cost.
Cobra Fly-Z Driver
The all-titanium Cobra Fly-Z driver has been built to deliver a combination of maximum distance with extreme forgiveness.
Tom Olsavsky explains where it fits in the Fly-Z family:
The Fly-Z Driver is positioned as one of the most forgiving drivers currently in the marketplace, yet it doesn’t sacrifice distance. The 460cc driver offers a slightly larger address profile that enabled our engineers to create the most forgiving driver that Cobra Golf has ever made.
Unlike the Fly-Z+, the weight and therefore the CG of the Fly-Z is fixed in a low back configuration that is set to provide approximately an extra 1°launch angle and 300 rpm additional spin than the Fly-Z+ driver in the back FlipZone position.
MyFly8 technology allows golfers to choose from eight simple adjustable loft/trajectory settings from 9° to 12° to maximize distance and manage trajectory, while the SmartPad delivers a square face at address regardless of loft setting.
The Fly-Z is also available in five colours and comes with a 60 gram Matrix VLCT shaft and a Lamkin-ACE 3GEN Crossline Grip.
Ladies’ versions of the Fly-Z driver come with their own personalised colours of raspberry, silver flower pearl and ultramarine.
Cobra Fly-Z XL Driver
Finally the Fly-Z XL driver is aimed at making the game easier for players who need the help producing a higher draw-biased ball flight for extra distance.
The all titanium head has a lower profile than the Fly-Z and an offset hosel that helps create the trajectory often needed by seniors, ladies and golfers who are new to the game.
In testing Cobra say the Fly-Z XL delivers up to 17.5 yards of draw bias, which is 10.5 yards more than the standard Fly-Z set with the MyFly8 hosel set to a maximum draw, so this is ideal for golfers struggling with a slice from the tee.
Cobra engineers have also created a high MOI sole geometry that combines with the an offset design to make the Fly-Z XL easier to hit straight, increase stability and maintain distance.
