Take a look at the Cobra Fly-Z family of fairway woods and hybrids and you can see the technology that is driving these clubs to deliver more consistent distance by increasing ball speed on off-centre hits.
The integration of Cobra's Speed Channel, an engineered trench that surrounds the face, allows the engineers to minimise thickness across the face to increase ball speed across a larger area of the hitting surface for consistent distance.
In the fairways a high strength 465 stainless steel place insert measures 3023 square millimetres, which means the sweet spot is now 20% larger and 18% thinner than previous Cobra fairway models.
The increased ball speed and distance from the face is complemented by Cobra's Crown Zone Weighting that removes weight from the crown and repositions it low and back in the head for a deep centre of gravity (CG), making the Fly-Z extremely forgiving on off-centre hits.
Jose Miraflor, Director of Product Marketing for Cobra Golf, explains how the combination of zone weighting with the speed channel face in the Fly-Z range will help golfers:
Performance advancements in our fairways and hybrids also come with Zone Weighting which delivered improved CG positioning both low and centred behind the centre of the face area. While these internal technologies are not visible to the golfer, performance gains can be easily noticed and easily attributed to the Speed Channel face.
Fly-Z+ Fairway Woods
The Fly-Z+ fairway woods have a tour-inspired compact head to give players a combination of maximum distance from either the tee or the fairway with the accuracy and control better players demand. Distance is maximised by combining the steel Speed Channel Face with a low/front CG Zone Weighting.
The Fly-Z+ utilises Cobra's MyFly8 adjustability to offer eight easy to select loft and trajectory settings, allowing players to dial in the perfect set up for their swing. Cobra's SmartPad complements the MyFly8 by ensuring the club sits square at address regardless of the loft and trajectory setting selected. The 3-4 fairway gives lofts of 12-15 degrees and the 4-5 fairway lofts of 16-19 degrees.
The Fly-Z+ fairways come in five colours - red, blue, black, white and orange - with a stock Matrix VLCT ST 75 gram graphite shaft. Other premium shafts, including the Aldila Tour Blue (86g) and Aldila Tour Green (67g) are available at no extra cost.
Available from January 23rd 2015 with an RRP of £199.
Fly-Z Fairways and Hybrids
The Fly-Z fairways and Fly-Z hybrids have a low/back CG position to cater for golfers looking for a combination of forgiveness and higher ball speed.
The steel face incorporates the Speed Channel maintaining speed across the face for off-centre strikes and the CG position encourages a higher trajectory for more carry distance.
The Fly-Z fairways also feature MyFly8 adjustability, so the 3-4 fairway model offer lofts of 13 to 16 degrees and the 5-7 model 17 to 20 degrees.
Three Fly-Z Hybrids are available, 2-3H, 3-4H and 4-5H and they also benefit from the MyFly8. The Fly-Z fairways and hybrids are available from January 23rd 2015 with RRP's of £189 and £159 respectively.
Fly-Z XL Fairways and Hybrids
Cobra are also releasing an XL version of the Fly-Z fairway woods and hybrids aimed at players who need more help an forgiveness from the fairway.
The XL launches higher and has a low and back centre of gravity and together with an offset head design this makes the club far more forgiving and suitable for players who need help with a tendency to slice the ball.
