Look around any golf club on a Saturday morning and you will see Ping golf bags used by a large number of golfers of all different ages and abilities.

The equipment brand prides itself on the quality of its products, from drivers and irons to apparel and even golf bags, and they have a reputation as one of the most reliable names in the game.

Ping Traverse Cart Bag

I tested the Ping Hoofer Stand Bag earlier this year and was impressed, so much so that I actually used it for the remainder of the summer and I can't see myself changing any time soon. Could the Traverse Cart Bag perform just as well?

The Tech

Said to be one of the lightest cart bags in Ping's range, the Traverse weighs in at about half a pound lighter than its previous generation (5.5kg) and presents a number of features which are designed to help make life easier for the golfer out on the course.

The bag features a 14-way top, allowing a dedicated space for each of your golf clubs as well as two slightly larger voids at the top and the bottom which are perfect for woods or for putters with slightly larger grips than normal.

There is a cart strap channel which allows you to attach your bag to a buggy without it impeding your access to any of the pockets, of which there are 13 in total including an insulated cooler pocket, ball pocket and rangefinder pocket.

The Traverse is available in six different colour options, and I tested the Heather Grey/Black/White model.

Ping Traverse Cart Bag Review

Looks

Ping bags are always popular among golfers because their looks appeal to a wide range of different people, as they are simple and smart but also provide a wide range of colour options to suit an individual's style.

The Traverse is no different, as the grey and black contrast finish looks contemporary and understated. The polyester fabric gives it a quality look which I probably do prefer to the shiny finish you see on many modern day bags.

The only downside to this is that it isn't waterproof, which is worth bearing in mind if you're unfortunate enough live somewhere like I do (Manchester) where it rains all of the time.

Whilst I'm not a massive fan of a 14 way top on a stand bag I do like it on a cart bag as the extra space and weight is less of an issue, and it just makes things a little cleaner when arranging your clubs in to your bag.

Despite not being too heavy the bag is quite bulky, particularly when you start to put waterproofs or other items in the large side pockets, and the front pockets themselves do seem to stick out quite prominently.

Performance and Functionality

Straight away when using this bag it is evident that Ping have put plenty of thought into it's functionality, such as the pocket placement and touches including the magnetic flap pockets on the outside of the side pockets, ideal for storing a water bottle or rangefinder for easy access.

The clips that are built-in within the large side pockets are also useful for hanging keys or other items for quick access, and I did also like the small tee net within one of the front pockets too. Ping are so good at little touches like these which really give you the feeling that their products have been designed by real golfers for golfers.

There's also a padded shoulder strap on the back for portability, and this slots inside a smaller elastic strap to stop it from getting in the way once on the trolley.

Ping Traverse Cart Bag

As you might expect with a bag of this size, there is plenty of room for everything you would ever need with you. Despite this it still manages to remain pretty lightweight which is useful for moving around on and off a trolley or buggy.

The bag seemed to fit on to my Motocaddy Cube trolley easily and securely and so this meant that there was no wobbling or tilting from the bag whilst testing, even when walking on different terrains and surface types and with the pockets full of waterproofs, golf balls and other accessories.

One small gripe - the cooler pocket is the main pocket at the bottom of the bag which I would say is usually reserved for golf balls, and so I found myself going into the side pockets to look for my drink on a couple of occasions before then remembering.

Ping Traverse Cart Bag Verdict

The Traverse Cart Bag is priced at an RRP of £165 which I think represents excellent value for money, especially when compared with PowaKaddy and Motocaddy models which have been reviewed on Golfalot this year. It's a practical, smart, functional and well-built golf bag which has all the space and features you will ever need and looks good too.

Ping Traverse Cart Bag

With six different colours available you should be able to find a version which suits you, and I can see the appeal being pretty wide across plenty of golfers.

The only real drawback is that the bag is not waterproof, which is worth bearing in mind if you like to play golf in varying weather conditions. It also means that if you're carrying extra bits with you on the course, they may not be completely protected from the elements.

Would I Use It?

If I was lucky enough to live somewhere a little drier, then I'd definitely use this when I was playing golf with a trolley. Unfortunately I don't, so I'm not sure I'd risk it. It's still a great bag though.
