The Cobra AMP Cell Hybrid offers the widest range of lofts that we have seen on a utility club and this is the ideal in that crucial fairway wood to long iron gap as it gives you so many options.
Each of the 3 models has six MyFly settings over 4 loft settings so it is really like having 2 clubs in one. Usually changing the loft will change the face angle but Cobra's innovative SmartPad is a bar on the sole that becomes the only point of contact with the ground. This enables the face to 'pivot' around a single point to maintain a square face whichever loft is selected, which is very impressive.
Cobra are rightly renowned for their hybrids and as a club the AMP Cell is as good as any from the Baffler range. The sound and feel at impact was very good and for the size of head it was pretty forgiving. The lively colour choices all look great behind the ball so make sure you try them like that rather than in the shop as they do look better on the course.
The various lofts did their job, but a couple of our testers found the regular lofts, especially at the top and bottom of each range, were more likely to produce a straight to fade shot. The 2 draw settings in the middle of the range were a little easier to get going and produced a more consistently straight flight with maybe a slight draw, but not much. This may then limit the usability of all the options so check them out first and see what you think.
That aside the adjustability and SmartPad of the Cobra AMP Cell hybrid are an innovative development which should be welcomed.
