When you think about surfing perhaps the golden beaches of California or Hawaii spring to mind?

But the fairway at your local golf club? Not so much.

GolfBoard

However, that could all be about to change as the GolfBoard, a big hit with golfers in America, is coming to the UK.

We tried one at the 2015 PGA Merchandise in Florida and were impressed with what they could do over some sloping terrain.

GolfBoard

So how does it work?

The board itself is made from a laminated hardwood, very much like a skate or snow board, and this is attached to an aluminium alloy body.

GolfBoard

This is all supported by 4 inch Kenda turf tyres that are driven by a proprietary 4 Wheel Drive system which delivers the unique "surfing experience" that allows golfers to manouvere the GolfBoard by adjusting their body weight.

There are a couple of options for controlling speed, either by a wireless hand held remote control or a by a thumb throttle attached to the removable stability bar. This stability bar is also where you attach you bag for the round and the latter option is advised at first for inexperienced riders.

GolfBoard

The GolfBoard can handle all sorts of terrain from steep grassy slopes to soft surfaces and gravel and is actually better for the golf course than a golf cart as the weigh considerably less and have a smooth acceleration pattern to prevent turf-damaging burn outs.

GolfBoard

For wary golfers there is a low speed setting that means the fastest the GolfBoard will travel is 6mph, but in the high speed setting it will travel at twice that speed.

GolfBoards are currently available to hire at The Grove, Essendon and Cheshunt golf courses and Frasercorp, who are introducing the GolfBoard to the UK, say this will grow across the UK.

Anna Darnell, Director of Golf Operations at The Grove, is certainly impressed with the impact they have made at her club:

We recently took delivery of a batch of GolfBoards and they have already proved very popular with players. They add a completely new element to the game of golf and let you experience a course in a way that you have never done before.

They are great fun to use. You get the feeling you’re surfboarding round the golf course and there is no doubt they help to speed up play.
