Getting your round off to good start can set the tone for your day. Much in the same way, getting your swing off to a good start can set the tone for your entire action. In these two videos, Scott Cranfield and Justin Rose help explain a simple drill that will help you achieve a smooth takeaway in your golf swing.

Two-Ball Drill

The drill to improve your takeaway involves placing two balls close together, in line with your target, with enough room for your club in between them. Scott recommends just a couple of inches between the balls, whilst Justin suggests perhaps 8 or 9 inches.

The idea is to roll the ball behind your club backwards and then swing as normal. Seeing how and where the ball rolls will indicate if you takeaway moves too far to the inside or outside. When done correctly, the ball should roll just inside the target line.

Keep It Smooth

One thing you will notice with this drill is how little effort it takes to roll the ball. You don't need to whip the club back or force the ball away from your address position. That thought is key and you should take note of how smoothly you can take the club away and still complete a good swing.
