Cobra has announced their latest range of Irons and Hybrids in both Variable Length and One Length variety, featuring the same new Speedback technology as seen in the Driver and Fairway models.
This technology combines a low centre of gravity (CG) and a high moment of inertia (MOI) to generate ball speed and forgiveness, which Cobra claim has resulted in their most powerful and stable iron and hybrid range to date.
Cobra King F9 Speedback Irons
Available in both traditional and one-length variations, the new F9 irons use Speedback Technology to develop innovative shaping elements which are said to allow optimised forgiveness and distance in a game improvement iron.
Tom Olsavsky, Vice President of R&D for Cobra Golf, explains:
Golfers have been forced to choose between distance or forgiveness in their game improvement irons. If you wanted more distance, then you sacrificed forgiveness, and vice versa. With the new Speedback irons golfers can have their cake and eat it too. Never has a game improvement iron set had the perfect blend of distance and forgiveness, until now.
Cobra’s new technology features a new Speedback sole, where weight is added using a steel belt which wraps around the back of the iron to create a lower and deeper CG, maximising ball speed, launch and carry distance. This Speedback shaping also allows more weight to be added further out towards the toe and heel of the head to increase performance across the face. Up to 33 grams of Tungsten were added to the 4-7 irons, resulting in an MOI increase of up to 10% in the long irons.
An improved E9 face is 3 grams lighter and the variable thickness of the face allows for a greater sweet spot. The forged Pwrshell insert features an undercut sole design along with an internal Speed Channel to retain more energy to the ball for better launch and ball speeds.
CNC Precision Milling on the face, as first seen in the F8 Driver and continuing into the F9 Metals, allows for more consistent groove shaping and accurate lofts, creating a more precise performance from every iron. Long irons, mid irons and wedges are developed with different groove shapes to suit the difference performance required of each club.
CNC milled V-grooves in the 4-7 irons improve distance by reducing spin for a stronger flight, whilst U-grooves in the 8-PW increase spin for better control and accuracy. The wedge grooves in the GW and SW have tighter spacing to maximise spin and trajectory control around the greens.
Progressive Hosel Lengths throughout the set create different centres of gravity to allow the desired ball flight from short irons up to long irons. Cobra Connect, powered by Arccos, is available for the set and features electronically enabled grips which are used with the Arccos Caddie app so that users can track their stats and improve their game.
Cobra is also introducing their One Length option for the King F9 Speedback irons, for those golfers who seek the consistency and simplicity of this variation.
Engineered with matching 7-iron length and head weights, the set allows golfers to use one simple, repeatable setup throughout the set to allow more confidence and consistency.
Cobra King F9 Speedback Hybrids
Completing the Speedback range are the new King F9 Speedback Hybrids, available in both variable length or One Length models. The new Speedback technology has been combined with the popular Baffler rails to create what Cobra are calling their highest performing Hybrid in its history.
The Speedback technology features a low, back weight structure sitting in between the two Baffler rails, and this combination lowers the CG and improves turf interaction to create better ball and club speed as well as improving strike from varying lies.
Improvements to the shape of the head include a 10% larger clubhead than the previous F8, which creates a higher MOI and therefore increases forgiveness. The hybrid also features a straighter leading edge so that golfers are able to line up to the target in the same way that they would for an iron.
An interchangeable 15-gram tungsten weight is fixed low and back on the head, to lower the CG and produce more speed with a higher ball flight.
Avaiable from the end of January 2019, the F9 hybrids come in 17, 19, 21 or 24 degrees of loft and come standard with a Fujikura Atmos 70g shaft in varying flex, complete with a black Lamkin Crossline Cobra Connect grip.
The hybrids are also available in the One Length variation and again match the length and lie angle of a 7-iron to create a more repeatable setup and swing feeling.
They are available in 19, 21 or 24 degrees of loft and feature blue Lamkin Crossline Cobra Connect grips.
