Golf Courses in Spain

It was the late ninteenth century when the first golf course in Spain opened outside Madrid in 1895 and by 1918 Spain had six golf courses.

The temperate Spanish climate is perfectly suited to the game and it is no surprise it flourished and visitors from all over the world have since been attracted to the many world class Spanish golf courses that are to to be found in areas such as the Costa Del Sol and the Costa Blanca.

Golf courses such as the immaculate Valderrama, the first course in continental Europe to host the Ryder Cup with Spanish hero Severiano Ballesteros fittingly leading the home side in 1997.

San Roque and Sotogrande are the jewels in the crown of Southern Spain, but courses such as those at the Almerena Resort are also worthy of mention.

PGA Catalunya, Spain

Classic tests abound through Spain's heartland with the Club de Campo de Madrid having hosted the Spanish Open on numerous occassions, whilst a trip to the Madrista's big sporting rivals Barcelona will give golfers a chance to tackle the recently located El Prat as well as the highly rated PGA Golf de Catalunya.

A trip to the Atlantic coastline and the city of Bilbao offers up the challenge of San Sebastian, home to another Spanish golfing hero, Jose-Maria Olazabal.

Golf in Spain has grown and adapted to meet the demands of the many visitors that it brings to the country and the wide variety and quality of Spanish golf courses is testimony to the games continuing attraction.
