The golf courses of East Lothian offer visitors to Edinburgh a host of fantastic courses within easy reach of the historic capital. Stretching along the Firth of Forth from Musselburgh to Dunbar, the East Lothian golf courses offer great layouts for every visiting player.
Muirfield is home to the Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers who were founded in 1744 and originally played on Leith Links
Heading east from Edinburgh, golfers enter the region of East Lothian at Musselburgh, a historic town that offers three contrasting challenges. Set in the middle of the racecourse, Musselburgh Links Old Course, is an old style nine hole links that has hosted the Open Championship, whilst Royal Musselburgh is a James Braid parkland course that demands accuracy. Completing the trio of Musselburgh courses is Musselburgh Golf Club, the longest and most challenging of the three.
Further up the coast is Longniddry Golf Club, a testing mix of links with some holes that wander through mature trees and a mile or so further onthe coast the village of Aberlady offers the traditional links of Kilspindie next to the newer, challenging layout of Craigielaw.
Entering Gullane golfers are seemingly surrounded by excellent golf. Luffness New Golf Club greets visitors to this golfing centre and the hill around which the courses of Gullane No 1, Gullane No 2 and Gullane No 3 run dominates the town.
Gullane No.1, East Lothian
All historic and challenging links layouts these courses are a delight and will test every level of player. Of course Gullane is world famous as the home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers at Muirfield, host to the Open Championship on a number of occasions and rightly renowned as one of the great golfing tests.
Three relatively new but highly rated courses have recently opened between Gullane and North Berwick, with both Archerfield and Renaissance sure to become firm favourites in the future, a position that the West Links at North Berwick rightly holds with the famed Redan hole copied on courses across the globe. North Berwick is also home to The Glen, an enjoyable clifftop challenge, whilst completing the stretch is the excellent links at Dunbar Golf Club.
