Rated No. 25 in Europe by Golf World magazine and host to the 2002 European Amateur Championship, Troia is a magnificent links course and an absolute 'must play'. We think this Trent Jones classic is the most testing course in Portugal - when Sam Torrance won the Portuguese Open here in 1983, he was the only man under par. Sand is the major obstacle - it's everywhere, not only in the bunkers that protect the postage stamp greens, but also in many of the rough areas. Troia is set in a fantastic position on an isolated peninsula and is reached by car ferry.

Todays GolferA gem. Beautiful, undulating fairways weave through a sandy pine forest. Small, tricky greens. Excellent bunkering. Seriously challenging from back tees.

This is a real gem, but then it is a Trent Jones Senior course! The fairways are narrow and undulating, sometimes winding through small sand dunes. If you miss the fairway there is a small area of rough before the ball will reach "waste bunkers" of shrubs and sand. The greens are really excellent, but accuracy is essential as some are not much larger than a pocket handkerchief. Although it has recently suffered from a problem that means that over 50% of the pine trees have now died, it is still a pretty course with some holes comparable to Turnberry, Troon and other Open courses. It is well worth the ferry ride which also means that it is normally under used.
This is a golfers golf course and a true test, especially in the wind and probably in my top ten of European mainland courses.
