Golf Course Says
The Peter Allis designed 18 hole course at Surrey Downs opened for play as recently as 1998 and since then has matured into one of the finest courses in the area. The course is maintained to the very highest standard and the scenery and views are outstanding. Surrey Downs is a vibrant, forward looking golf club and all club competitions are mixed allowing the Mens, Ladies and Junior sections to compete with and against each other. The clubhouse has an excellent restaurant and visitors are most welcome on weekdays.
Measuring just 6,300 yards off the back tees, Surrey Downs is a very pleasant parkland course was obviously not intended for professional tournaments, but it will give any club or weekend golfer an excellent workout. With generally long par-3's (countering several short-ish par 4's), a few blind drives to sloping fairways and very unforgiving long grass beyond the semi-rough, Alliss' design contains more than its fair share of golfing challenge. Surrey Downs is usually in excellent condition and its elevated position in this area of folding downland provides wonderful, but often windy views over the surrounding wooded hills. The twist in the tail, as is often the case, comes at the 18th. This shortish par-5 incorporates a dangerous water hazard in front of a huge roller-coaster double green (shared with the 9th); this is just the sort of hole to wreck an otherwise decent scorecard or decide many a club match play.
