Golf Course Says
The Sunningdale Old Course, which opened in 1901, was laid out by Willie Park Jnr. It is pure enchantment that characterizes Sunningdale Old. Virtually every hole is played in splendid – and beautiful – isolation, and in harmony with nature. There is subtlety here, a measure of drama, and a wealth of that one indispensable ingredient, pleasurable excitement.
No wonder it may be the most beloved inland course in the British Isles. All that being said, there are those who like the New Course, which opened in 1923, at least as well. The New is perhaps a bit more rugged than the Old, a bit more masculine, if you will. This is rich and handsome and challenging golf, Harry Colt in top form.
Golfalot Review of Sunningdale Golf Club Old Course
The Sunningdale Old Course is one of the classic English heathland courses of South East Britain. Right from your arrival at the majestic clubhouse you know you are somewhere special. The heather and the tree lined fairways cocoon you from the surrounding area and you can tell it was designed by an old master as there are several blind and semi-blind drivers and approaches.
Sunningdale has many excellent holes, but the pick of the bunch was the 10th, which starts with a high tee looking down a long valley with the half way house and the trasitional sausage sandwich waiting for you at the end. The climb to the last green with the large oak tree is memorable too, for all those who watched Tour events there past and present. In this day and age the par-5s are very reachable but the course is still an exacting test. For officiandos of the game, a round at Sunningdale is a must.
