Golf Course Says
Stockport Golf Club was established in 1904 and the present course was opened in 1909. The course was designed by Open winner Sandy Herd and the dedication of the club's first professional, Peter Barrie, ensured that the construction provided a golf course that was a real test of ingenuity and shot making. Stockport golf course has been enjoyed by some of the enduring greats of the game including The Great Triumvarate of Vardon, Taylor and Braid, the preeminent English golfer Sir Henry Cotton and Ryder Cuppers like Eric Brown and Dai Rees. In 1929 the visiting American Ryder Cup team played a team of Stockport amateurs and only just held them off - the Americans had to rely on a trademark late fightback from the legendary Walter Hagen to beat the Cheshire men. The original layout as imagined by Herd and constructed by Barrie remains intact but additional bunkers and the maturing of the many trees have added to the challenge and enhanced the feeling of peace and tranquility that is on offer at Stockport Golf Club.
