Golf Course Says
A popular fixture in Cardiff since opening in 1936 St Mellons Golf Club is a fine example of British parkland golf. The course actually covers the border of Gwent and South Glamorgan although the clubhouse, and therefore the course itself, belong to Gwent. Some of Europe's best players have tested themselves against the distintive clover shaped design of the 18 holes over the year with Antonio Garrido stealing a march over such names as Sandy Lyle, Mark James, Sam Torrance and Brian Barnes by holding the professional record over many years. Look out for the par three third - called Cotton's Choice because it was so highly rated by Henry Cotton, that most successful of British golfers. The two closing holes are also something special, a pair of par fours where you'll be happy to survice on Walter Hagen's old maxim: "three of them and one them makes par." St Mellons Golf Club is a lovely course, a fine challenge and visitors are made extremely welcome.
