Golfalot Review
The Balgownie course at Royal Aberdeen is the 6th oldest course in the world and you can feel the tradition everywhere. From the founding in 1780 to the replica US Amateur trophy from member Richie Ramsay's win in 2006, the compact clubhouse ouses class.
The first tee is right outside the bar window and you hit towards the North Sea as you start one of the great stretches in world golf as the front nine snakes up a valley between the dunes. Narrow fairways and hidden greens mean local knowledge is a premium and you will want to play this more than once. Miss the fairways and even if you are not in the rough, you will have an uneven lie from which to find another small target. But this is great fun.
It's hard to pick a favourite hole but the long 2nd, 4th and 6th require 2 or even 3 great shots and into the wind the 9th is a brute, dog-legging uphill through the dunes to a raised green. Turning for home the blind tee shot at 10 requires a lay up and then things do open up a little as you make the inward journey.
The green at 15 was relaid by Martin Hawtree in 2012 and now requires a more demanding approach. The final 3 holes are back to being a little tighter, more in the mould of the front nine and are a great finish to the course right under the Clubhouse bay window
Royal Aberdeen Balgownie is one of those must play courses and we can't recommend it highly enough.

Royal Aberdeen Golf Course will be in most people's top 5 favorite links courses. It is just superb. Some of the best greens in the country mixed with a layout to match any links course in the world, Royal Aberdeen is as good as they come. The first three holes are just perfect holes and if you get a windy day, you will do well to play to your handicap. Royal Aberdeen Golf Club = great clubhouse, perfect setting, amazing course!
