Where2Golf.comAmong the many links courses of Britain and Ireland there is an elite which have a breath-taking simplicity, a wonderful layout and are maintained to an exceptional standard - Royal St George's, Muirfield, Royal Porthcawl and Portmarnock (Old) are surely the standard bearers. Here at Portmarnock you start alongside the estuary and set off on an essential links experience - along the way are some of the finest revetted bunkers you'll find anywhere (and plenty of them); the sand dunes are not the biggest in golf, but big enough to make life interesting, and sea views come into things at the 13th and 15th tees. Portmarnock is home to an excellent succession of 27 classic links holes - the Red / Blue nines make up the usual combination, but the Yellow nine (added in 1971) will not disappoint either. Some would rate this one of the best links courses anywhere. On that you can make up your own mind; the key thing is get to Portmarnock and play it.
