Review of Old Thorns Golf & Country Estate
Golfalot rating:
4 stars out of 5
Old Thorns Manor Hotel Golf Course has undergone and lot of recent development and has the makings of an excellent resort. The course is not overly long but it demands accurate shot making as it winds it's way through the trees with several dog-legs requiring careful course managment. Old Thorns is also set amongst rolling hills and at several points you get great views across the surrounding countryside.

There are many excellent holes, but the short par-4 5th is one of the best. A sharply downhill short par-4 tempts you to try and drive the narrow gap to the green when a more conservative play is the better option. The par-3s are very good and the 18th is a great final hole with a dog leg drive followed by a demanding second shot to a raised green in front of the clubhouse. With more rooms and hotel facilities being added Old Thorns Manor is a fun and challenging course that is ideal for a weekend golf break or entertaining day out.

The rolling nature of the landscape makes Old Thorns Hotel Golf Course idyllic golf terrain. Mature trees, natural springs and several lakes add to the visual pleasure of playing the course and the elevated position of many holes offers spectacular views.

At Old Thorns a tight dog-leg right par-4 followed by a tight dog-leg left par-5 start proceedings on this part-wooded, part-open undulating golf course. Space off the tee is never too plentiful - even on the lower parts of the course, which are less tree-lined than the more wooded higher parts, the ability to bash away with the big-timber is restricted by the presence of small lakes and OB, which narrows things down again. The highlight of the Old Thorns golf course is surely the magnificence of the views over surrounding Hampshire wooded countryside - even if there are a few stiff climbs to get to the views. But the climbs are worth it, particularly when they lead to the spectacular views and some breathtaking holes such as the plunging par-4 5th and fabulous par-5 17th.

A fine English parkland. Weaves between verdant rolling hills of a 400 acre estate.

Old Thorns Manor is a fairly typical resort-style course; very tight layout, with holes running alongside one another. The small greens are the only major defense for this relatively short layout. The course features several holes with noticable elevation change that create a visually pleasing yet challenging aspect to your round. If the greens improved it could has potential to be a very good course, but the day I had (in May), they were disappointing and slow. The resort/hotel is maybe more impressive than the course.
