Golf Course Says
A modern championship links with the stamp of the ultimate champion. That is the mouthwatering prospect for golfers to savour at Machynys Peninsula Golf and Country Club. The creation of the Machynys Peninsula golf course was overseen by Gary Nicklaus on behalf of his father, the legendary, 18 times major champion Jack. Gary points to the fourth and 16th holes as the pick of an incredible bunch. The course has been designed, as might be expected from a Nicklaus design, to test the best players but the inclusion of five tee position on all 18 holes means that Machynys Penisula is a championship course that is accessible to all players. Machynys Peninsula has quickly developed a reputation as one of the best courses - and one of the most talked about courses - in Wales.

Modern links layout has improved immeasurably since opening in 2004. The USGA-spec tees and greens are stunning. Several top holes with the par 4 16th shading it. A handful of tees - be realistic and pick what's best for your game.

In response to the previous review, I felt I needed to post the following. I live near Machynys golf club and regularly play the course in our work society. It is the only Nicklaus design course in Wales (granted it is Gary not Jack), and it is an absolute delight to play. If you want to experience some of the best greens, finest tees (which I wouldnt mind being the greens at my home club) and some of the best fairways you will play off, then visit Machynys. And lets not forget, this golf course only opened in June 2005. I cant think of any golf course that at such a young age has the quality that Machynys has to offer. (it has also hosted 4 Ladies European Tour events and I think it has either held or is due to hold an R&A event in the near future)

The clubhouse is warm and welcoming and the experience is always generally very, very good. Furthermore, if the above reviewer had asked, he would have found out that the club is well linked with Titleist (the well known golf manufacturer) and they provide pencil golf bags to every visitor that turns up with a trolley when there is a ban (the reviewer also played the course in November - it takes more than just a sunny day to let any golf course drain). Whoever it was that had the heart condition should go and play the course in the Summer months rather than risk playing the course during one of the wettest winters on record! So in conclusion, if it means having a trolley ban every now and again to keep the golf course in a great condition so be it. We will keep going back again and again.

I played this course on the 9th of November which was a beautiful sunny day. After a 2 hour drive (due to traffic), I kitted up, put my tour bag on my Powakaddy and went to the club house, only to be told that there no trolleys or buggies allowed on the course. As a result I had to carry a 10.5" tour bag around a 7000+ yard course. During my agonising struggle, I noticed that the ground was extremely firm (due to the apparent drainage system). The most annoying thing about this day was not the fact I had to carry an extremely heavy tour bag around 18 hole, but the fact that I saw 4 tractors on the course and also numerous service vehicles, driving over tees, greens, etc. All of which weighed infinitely heavier than my trolley and bag put together! The main plus points were that the greens were true and the fairways were well maintained. So my advice to you is......... If you want to play a long, boring, non-memorable course, that will cause injury to yourself, play this course. P.S. after writing this review, I was told by a friend of mine that they also refused a trolley to a golfer with a heart complaint and a doctor's note stating that he couldn't carry!
