Golf Course Says
The Llandrindod Wells Golf Club that is played today was created by 12 majors. Six time Open (and one time US Open) champion Harry Vardon first designed the course before Vardon's Great Triumvarate colleague - and five time Open winner - James Braid made some adjustment. The course that Harry and James built is, in essence, the one that is played to. We may, in fact, add another five majors to the mix because the opening game at Llandrindod Wells was played out between Vardon, Braid and the third member of that untouchable threesome, five time Claret Jug holder, JH Taylor. Today the course has a par of 69 and measures just under 5800 yards. Given the heritage of the course it is no surprise that this is a course which does not suffer for its lack of length: The modern day "bomber" will soon be found out on a course that its creators built in the manner of an "upland links" where thought, strategy and patience will get their reward long before the booming driver. The 18th at Llandrindod Wells Golf Club is exactly as Vardon planned it and leaves you deciding on going for the carry or playing safe: As Vardon wanted Llandrindod leaves you thinking till the end.
Llandrindod Wells Golf Course has lush upland turf fairways on which the ball sits up invitingly, turf banks and natural hazards, with true and well protected greens, present a fair but critical examination of a golfer's prowess; sheer strength will not suffice.
