Golf Course Says
Only ten miles from the Home of Golf at St Andrews, Kingarrock Hickory Golf offers golfer the chance to travel back in time and play with the clubs and balls of the pre war era. Kingarrock golf course was a family course at Wemyss Hall in Cupar built by Frederick Sharp - a keen golfer and member of the Royal and Ancient. Kingarrock was for the use of family and friends and both Frederick and his son were able golfers. Frederick died in 1932 and Hugh was tragically killed at the Castlecary Rail Disaster in 1937 meant the course fell into disuse. It was eventually ploughed up to help the war effort and, when peace was declared, the course was not returned to its original sporting use. At the turn of the new millenium, however, a group of golfers with an interest in history joined together to help the National Trust for Scotland bring the course back to life. In June 2008 their hard work was rewarded when golf was played at Kingarrock for the first time in 70 years. Today the course is open to visitors throughout the summer months with knowledgable local staff on hand to advise about the hickory clubs and fill in the atmospheric detail. Kingarrock Hickory Club is a fantastic chance to play golf the way it used to be played. And everyone who plays in the costumes of the roaring twenties receives a free gift.
