Golf Course Says
After playing the Ballybunion Old Course for the first time, a man would think that the game of golf originated here. Located on the Shannon estuary, The Old Course is a true seaside links course, virtually treeless and a course of sharp contours throughout. There appears to be no man- made influence. It looks like the Old Course at Ballybunion Golf Club was laid out on land back in the 10th century. There is a wild look to the place the long grass covering the dunes that pitch and roll throughout the course making it very intimidating. Yet the course is eminently fair. While there would appear to be a lot of blind shots, there aren’t. Even where there are blind shots, you are given a good idea where you must hit the ball. Ballybunion Old Course doesn’t fool you altogether!

Driving to Ballybunion you have an excited feeling about what you are about to experience. In truth, you can never anticipate the variety and unique natures of the holes. I was fairly disappointed with the first 5 holes, but from there on you are treated to a host of winding, bumpy links holes that test all the shots and have you soaking up the views of the coast. Personal favourites were the 6th, 7th, 11th, and then the last 4 holes. We were blessed with good weather, and there are fewer better places to place golf on a day like that. The greens were disappointing considering we played in late April, and I was disappointed with the look and feel of the clubhouse. Overall though, the course is fantastic and the sheer size and orientation of the sand dunes will tire you eyes as well as your legs. Certainly a 'bucket list' course and well worth the drive/cost.

I've only played the Old Course at Ballybunion Golf Club twice, but both times it was a fantastic experience. Ballybunion Golf Course is my favorite course in the world. Looking forward to giving Cashen a go next time over, which I hope is soon. 11th on the Old Course is possibly the best par 4 on the planet, and 15 is the best par 3 that I've played, bar none. And where else do you start a round by hitting over a grave yard?

I was going to say Ballybunion Golf Course is a wonderful course, but it should be said that both courses here are excellent. They are incredible challenges, and this is certainly the place to train as a wind player a Sherpa if you are off line. A truely memorable visit awaits you at Ballybunion Golf Club.
