Golf Course Says
Athlone Golf Club was founded in 1892 making it one of the longest established clubs in Ireland. It is a superb 18-hole parkland course situated on the shores of Lough Ree in the centre of the country bounded on three sides by picturesque Lough Ree. Beautifully designed, Athlone Golf Course exploits the natural splendour of its surroundings, affording from its vantage points and from the modern strategically appointed clubhouse panoramic views of the lake and its wooded islands. Its tree-lined fairways and undulating terrain make it a true test of golf.
Media Reviews
Where2Golf.comAt Athlone, the big drop from the tee at the par-4 1st and the approach to an elevated green is a sign of the ups and downs to come, although this is not a hilly course. The accurate tee shot required at the par-3 2nd alludes to the need for accuracy here at Athlone. The short par-4 3rd simply reinforces these two traits, while providing another elevated green from which to admire the stunning views over Lough Ree. The 4th and 5th are challenging holes taking you out towards the end of the Yew Point peninsula, from which views over the Lough and its extensive reed beds maintain the enchantment of this location. The Athlone course itself is very well maintained, but for all you slicers the frequent presence of OB on the right will test your nerve.
