Waterville Golf Links is one of the rarities - a true championship links course. Quite simply courses of this quality must be cherished and it is little surprise to see golfers from across the globe paying pilgrimage to this wonderful example of how links land is so perfectly equipped to play host to the Royal and Ancient game. The expensive lob wedge may need to stay in the locker room but Waterville will let you try a full range of shots - including some you didn't even know you could play. The course is over 100 years old and is considered one of the finest in Ireland - indeed in 2008 it was listed as one of the top ten courses in the UK and Ireland. Unlike many of the famous links, however, Waterville lay dormant, neglected and forgotten in the 1960's and only reopened for play in 1973. The legendary course designer Tom Fazio has recently overseen some improvement and refurbishment that seem set to ensure that Waterville Golf Links continues to win fans and devotion around the world. Tiger Woods and Ernie Els have prepared for Opens here and Payne Stewart was once club captain. With fans amongst the games elite and amongst amateurs Waterville is universally loved.
