Turnhouse Golf Club is one of the best courses of the many that cluster around Edinburgh. With easy access to the city centre, the airport and the burgeoning financial and commerce hubs of Gogarburn and Edinburgh Park the course is in a prime location. 6060 yards and a par 69 Turnhouse is a fair test but a stern one with no two holes the same and a healthy number of the par fours stretching over 400 yards. From the highest point at Turnhouse Golf Course the visitor can enjoy fine views of both the Lothians and, over the Forth, towards Fife and beyond.

Turnhouse Golf Club is set on the outskirts of the city right next to the Airport and boy, do you notice those planes. You feel that if you catch the ball on the top of the driver and sky it, the aircraft could be in danger. Not the greatest of course with a few bad holes such as the third where you have no idea where to hit your drive. Turnhouse Golf Course does finish with a decent par 5, but that's about it. It does however have fantastic practice ground and a fairly friendly clubhouse.

How can I sum up Turnhourse Golf Course... Poor layout, usually extremely poor greens, unattractive and set next to an airport! Not much else I can offer to improve my opinion of Turnhouse Golf Course.

Turnhouse golf club is a good layout which does well with the hill it finds itself on. You get some good views over Edinburgh and some close ups of the planes landing at Edinburgh airport! A new par-3 was put in at the 5th which is a good move. The back nine from the 13th is the best bit of the course with some tight driving and lots of birdie chances. Good practice area too.

I paid my second visit to Turnhouse this summer and must say, the course has improved dramatically since my previous visit (about 5 years ago). Each hole at Turnhouse provides its own challenge, yet it manages to maintain a fairness about it. 8 par 4s measuring over 400 yards, a handful of blind shots, well bunkered par 3's and a sprinkling of gorse will test even the scratch golfer, but there are still plenty of birdie opportunities to be had. The greens were smooth and true, practice facilities as good as I've seen on my travels and the clubhouse offered good food in a friendly environment. A thoroughly enjoyable golf club.
