St Andrews New Course is often said to be overshadowed by the Old Course and while that may be true it should not detract from the greatness of the New Course in its own right. It remains something of a hidden gem but the course was actually opened in 1895 (Old Tom Morris taking charge of laying the course out) when the demand for golf at St Andrews was too great for the Old Course to cope with. St Andrews New Course is a fine example of the classic Scottish links and share (along with the distinction of share fairways and a shared green) the unique atmosphere so redolent of the Home of Golf.

The St Andrews New Course is widely regarded as the best golf course in St Andrews. The Jubilee off the back is maybe the hardest, but your shot making will be challenged more by the New Course. Unlike the Old Course, the New is a more traditional out and back links course with tight fairways through the dunes and gorse. It is all wind dependent of course, but after a gentle start the 4th, 5th and 6th show the New baring its teeth and this starts the toughest section of the course through to the 10th. The green at the 8th is wonderfully framed by dunes and the long par-3 9th by the shore is a classic. Turning for home on the 12th tee, the prevailing wind can make this a very long stretch of golf indeed and the closing 4 holes have ruined many a fine round, particularly the 15th and par-3 17th. Treat every hole with respect and manage the par-3s well, as you will be pushed to find a better or harder collection of short holes in golf. A wonderful course and a must play if you are in St Andrews.

St Andrews New Course is the best course at St Andrews by miles. A great test with the 6th hole standing out as one of the hardest par 4's I've ever played. Some massive bunkers that seem to catch any stray shot. If you play golf and are in St Andrews, the St Andrews New Course is a must play.

The St Andrews New course is a fantastic test of golf. Even though the Jubilee off the back may be tougher, this is no picnic. A few gentle holes to start with, but from the 4th things get very tight amongst the gorse, with 6 being the best hole on the course. Depending on the wind, the par-3 9th along the estuary can be easy or impossible. The back nine into the wind is as tough as it gets and you will be begging for the excellent clubhouse to appear soon over the horizon! If you can't get on the Old then the New is the one to play.
