Royal Troon Old Course

One of Scotland's great championship link Royal Troon Golf Club Old Course is a regualr host of the Open. Gorse, broom, deep rough and the ever present wind make this a true golfing challenge. The Championship tees now measure over 7000 yards but it is accurate shot making that will deliver a decent score. The front nine is the place to make a move on your card as the back nine can present an even more formiddable challenge. Royal Troon Old Course was formed in 1878 and granted its Royal title in 1978 - the last of the royal clubs to be honoured in this way.

What Golfalot Says

Royal Troon golf course forms part of the great Ayrshire championship golf coast that includes Turnberry and Prestwick. The front nine runs parallel to the sea and a slight push can have you on the beach. The famous postage stamp hole at the 7th is the shortest par-3 in championship golf, but it is by no means a pushover and you can see why when you play it. It is also the highest point on the course which follows a classic out and back design, hugging the dunes. Into the wind the back 9 is very demanding and the final 3 holes are excellent and will require all your skill to navigate. The last hole at Royal Troon heads right back to the clubhouse which sits behind the out of bounds line right behind the 18th green. A superb test of golf and thoroughly enjoyable.

Royal Troon is a classic Open venue. Very fair but very tough. Depending on the wind you can make your score going out or back. The famous postage stamp par-3 8th was great fun and shorter than it looks, but a very small target. When you turn for home Royal Troon starts to bare its teeth with 10 and 11 being very tough. 16 and 17 are excellent too as the excitement builds to heading down the last towards the Royal Troon clubhouse. Definitely a 'must play'.
