Royal St George's golf course is the southernmost of all the active Open Championship courses but that does not mean it is any easier. The course winds its way through the dunes and after a fair start, the tough 3rd and 4th with it's huge fairway bunker give you a taste of what's in store. The par-3s are all excellent and the best at the 7th is beatifully framed by the dunes. Depending on the wind it can be a wedge or a wood! The halfway hut at 12 helps you on the way to the far corner of the course at the 14th tee. This great par-5 with a burn and out of bounds up the right defines the course, although the jury is still out on the revised green that was built by Donald Steel in the 1990s and still seems a little out of place. The final four holes are as tough as any other in England as the humpd back fairways and swales around the green conspire to inflate your score. However the purity of the course and the little St George's cross flags on every hole enhance the playing experience and nullify any disappointment you might have at being thwarted by one of the hardest courses in England. The Royal St George's clubhouse is in a league of its own with fantastic facilities and one of the best main lounges you will find in the world of golf. Simply superb.
