Royal St George's

13 Opens (with number 14 to come in 2011), the British Amateur, the Walker Cup, the PGA Championship and the Brabazon Trophy to name but a few - Royal St George's Golf Club has hosted some of the great events since it first staged the Open in 1899. It is not difficult to see why major events are attracted to a course that Bernard Darwin, the legendary golf writer, called "as nearly my idea of heaven as is to be attained on earthly links." The course was designed by Dr Laidlaw Purves in 1887 and was intended as a southern equivalent of St Andrews. Since then the course, given its Royal title in 1902, has enjoyed an unwavering reputation as one of the finest in the world. The size of the challenge for a visiting player is clear: only three of St George's Open champions have finished under par! Royal St George's remains a course that golfer's across the world hope to play, following in the footsteps of Open champions like Harry Vardon, Walter Hagen, Bobby Locke and Greg Norman.

What Golfalot Says

Royal St George's golf course is the southernmost of all the active Open Championship courses but that does not mean it is any easier. The course winds its way through the dunes and after a fair start, the tough 3rd and 4th with it's huge fairway bunker give you a taste of what's in store. The par-3s are all excellent and the best at the 7th is beatifully framed by the dunes. Depending on the wind it can be a wedge or a wood! The halfway hut at 12 helps you on the way to the far corner of the course at the 14th tee. This great par-5 with a burn and out of bounds up the right defines the course, although the jury is still out on the revised green that was built by Donald Steel in the 1990s and still seems a little out of place. The final four holes are as tough as any other in England as the humpd back fairways and swales around the green conspire to inflate your score. However the purity of the course and the little St George's cross flags on every hole enhance the playing experience and nullify any disappointment you might have at being thwarted by one of the hardest courses in England. The Royal St George's clubhouse is in a league of its own with fantastic facilities and one of the best main lounges you will find in the world of golf. Simply superb.

Royal St George's golf course is everything you would expect of an Open venue. It's a very tough layout with some great holes over and through the dunes on the front nine. The stretch from 3 to 7 in particular is fantastic. There is not much in the way of scenery but the course makes up for it easily and the famous 14th along the out of bounds by Princes will test your nerves and the 15th is one of the hardest holes on the course. The clubhouse at Royal St Georges has to be experienced as it is one of the finest lounges you will ever go in and the dining room is serves a marvellous meal in great surroundings.
