Royal North Devon (Westward Ho)

Founded in 1864, Royal North Devon Golf Club is the oldest in England and Wales and is more popular now than it has ever been. The Royal North Devon Golf Course is a challenging one, a links situated on the rugged North Devon coast, where its exposed position (it would be flooded by the Atlantic were it not for the pebble ridge!), multitudes of spiky rushes, naturally formed grassy mounds and oft deep bunkers pose a tough round. Don't be deceived by the relative flatness of the Northam Burrows.

What The Media Says

GreenFree

The Royal North Devon Golf Club (sometimes known as Westward Ho!) is the oldest links course in England and was laid out on Northam Burrows in 1864 by Old Tom Morris. The course represents a true test of golf in every sense.

Todays Golfer

Well off the beaten track but a must play. The St Andrews of England. A Devonian delight, you need to play to appreciate the intricacies.

Where2Golf.com

Many rate Royal North Devon more highly than we have, based on its undoubted links to golfing history. Stepping onto Westward Ho !, as the course is usually known, is to step back in time. This is authentic golf on a less than perfectly manicured course; sheep and horses sharing the facilities with golfers (the greens are roped off from the grazing livestock). The bunkering at Royal North Devon is either purposefully crafted, railway sleepered, or simply a product of nature. The excellent links holes, from 4 to 10 (the 6th is a great hole), are flanked by some rather ordinary, flat and unspectacular golfing terrain, where white marker stones are employed to help you pick the right line. Needless to say the wind can be a major factor. Some may love this dip into golfing antiquity, others may be disappointed. One way or another, you should make the effort to play England’s oldest links course - and decide for yourself.
