Royal Dornoch Golf Course is considered the finest northerly course in the world, and no other course offers as delicious a feeling of getting away from it all or better provides the pieces of natural seaside beauty , challenge and enjoyment and shot values. After the second hole at Royal Dornoch Golf Course, you round a corner past a hedge and golfing heaven breaks loose. Holes are visible everywhere, the North Sea frames the right, mountains are ahead and hills lie to your left. You'll see people walking their dogs, cycling or wandering along a path up above. In late April and May the banks of whins are a carpet of yellow. Although it's a private course, Royal Dornoch Golf Club sits on public land, meaning that visitors are welcome. The fairways are inviting as they ramble this way and that, and golfers may feel encouraged to take a big swing and still stay on course. But simply hitting the fairway is rarely enough. It's no good, for instance, to hit the right side of the fairway on "Foxy," the par-four, 445-yard 14th hole, because the green isn't visible from there. It's hidden behind a sand hill that cuts into the fairway. Better to drive down the left side, then try to contrive a shot that finds the green, which is set on a precipice at nearly 90 degrees to the fairway. A true links experience for any golfer at Royal Dornoch Golf Club.

Royal Dornoch is one of those links courses every golfer must make the effort to play. The condition of the course is always excellent and the greens hard and fast. All the par-3s are excellent with the first 2 at the 2nd and 6th requiring you to hit the green or have an impossible chip. Coming back along the shore from 9 to 16 is a great stretch of golf. The Royal Dornoch clubhouse provides great refreshments and a fantastic view over the links. Well worth the journey.

Royal Dornoch is a joy to play. I heard great reviews about this course before I played it and they are all true. Steeped in tradition, this course grips you as much as the seaside dunes and the scenery. Wonderfully created from natural land there are many good holes here. My favorite's were the par 4 5th and par 4 16th holes. Both were good tests but cracking holes. I look forward to the next time I visit this lovely links course.
