The Old Course at the Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club is a formidable test of golf set amongst the splendour of the Forest from which it takes its name. Bernard Darwin wrote of the course in 1934, “Two salient facts come to mind. It is not quite like any other of my acquaintance, and secondly, I never knew anyone who played on it and was not fond of it.” Still ranked as one of the top 100 courses in the British Isles, this classic heathland test uses only the natural hazards of heather, narrow fairways, hollows and streams for protection but it is still a challenging test of golf. An inspiration to generations of course architects, such as the famed Harry Colt, the Old Course at Royal Ashdown Forest is simply a wonderful test. |

Royal Ashdown Old course is an excellent design with loads of great holes, but what about all the climbs! It's not really a hillside course, but the fact you go up and down the slopes several times makes it very tiring and the final hill at the rather poor 18th is too much to bear, especially as you walk past the haven of the excellent clubhouse to get to the green. Still, Royal Ashdown Old is a great course and well worth the visit.
