Occupying 300 acres of the Archerfield Estate, The Renaissance Club at Archerfield completes a stunning sequence of links golf courses on the East Lothian coast. The Royal Company of Edinburgh Golfers - more commonly referred to as Muirfield - borders the estate on the west, the two courses of the Archerfield Links Golf Club lie to the east and the famous West Links of North Berwick is close by as are the three courses of Gullane Golf Club and Luffness. With neighbours of this pedigreee The Renaissance golf course had to be top class and, in turning this perfect links land into an 18 hole championship course, architect Tom Doak has produced a course that can stand shoulder to shoulder with Scotland's best. Building on land that could have been naturally selected for links golf gave Doak, one of the foremost golf course architects working today, both opportunites and challenges. The land was already there, as if made for a links course, but the Archerfield Estate retains a special historic significance to the area and the opening of a course had to be sympathetic to the surroundings. Doak responded by crafting a course that used as much of the existing landscape as possible and caused as little disruption as possible. The result is The Renaissance Club. A links course that weaves its way through the dunes and contours that have been a feature of the Archerfield Estate for centuries. Many of the trees that played such an important role in protecting the land from the farm machinery that would have robbed it of its charm remain in place - a quirk that helps make this such a special links course.
