A nine hole pay and play course that can be easily accessed from Edinburgh Melville Golf Centre provides enough of a challenge to make golfers feel they are playing a "real" 18 hole course. The mix of holes makes Melville ideal for both the beginner and the experienced campaigner.

Mapped By SkyCaddie
A Tour caddie paces every hole, and every green, to get accurate yardages - and so should you. ONLY SkyCaddie® mappers walk every golf course using survey-grade GPS backpacks, marking up to 40 critical targets for each hole - including contours, distances to hazards, fairway targets and layups which may be invisible to laser rangefinders. Don't rely on old aerial photographs - trust SkyCaddie to give you the most reliable information in the game.
We found Melville in fine condition for a nine hole pay as you play course. The greens and fairways are more than adequate and better than you might expect from a course like this. The course is not hard but presents enough of a challenge to keep you occupied if you are playing with a beginner. Small, well protected greens on some of the holes make them more difficult than they appear. As this is a pay and play it can get busy, often with groups of children. There are better courses out there but if you want a gentle introduction - or reintroduction - to golf then Melville is a reasonable option. For a nine hole course that gets so much use, however, we did feel the green fees, especially at weekends, were quite steep.

You normally find Meliville in sound condition and there are worse places to go for quick round to get your eye in. It does seem to be a bit costly compared to what you get for your money elsewhere in the area. The plus side is, however, you can almost always get on even if you have to hit a few balls on the range for half an hour to wait for a tee time. There is a mix of par threes and par fours and some of the the short holes are a bit mundane (sadly, including the first - the course deserves a better start) but some of the par fours are really nice. Not a must play but perfectly adequate.
