The Open Championship has been held at Carnoustie's Championship Course seven times and every time the course throws up a real challenge for the world's best players. Scene of Ben Hogan's only Open triumph Carnoustie holds a magical place in the heart of golf fans. The course is one of the toughest links you will play but that toughness is carried with the innate fairness that makes this course so special. The visitors who make pilgrimages to Carnoustie each year know they are in for a real test of golf but they also know that the test is harsh but fair and that making the right shot selections is all important. The course itself was laid out, refined and improved by a trio of Scottish golfing giants: Allan Robertson, Old Tom Morris and James Braid. In truth, however, this is a natural amphitheatre for a game that has been played over this links for centuries. The genius of Hogan, the grit of Paul Lawrie, the charm of Jean van de Velde - you will arrive at Carnoustie with your own memories and impressions of the course but you will leave infected by the magical spirit that surrounds the proud old links.

Of all the Open Championship courses, Carnoustie is regarded as the hardest and rightly so in our view. It may not be blessed with the scenery of the other championship links, but at least the hotel gives the first and last holes some grandeur. Unless you are playing into a gale the first 7 holes are tough but on the right day you can put together a reasonable score. However the fun starts from the seemingly innocuous par-3 8th hole with out of bounds tight to the left of the green. Then Carnoustie starts to get it's teeth into you at the tough 9th and as you head for home the 13th and 14th are lovely holes, but just an appetiser for the hardest finish in golf. There is no let up from the 15th and you can be hitting just woods all the way in if the weather is against you. 15 is tough, 16 a brute of a par-3, 17 forces you to navigate the sweeping Barry Burn before you take on the dreaded 18th where so many disasters have befallen even the world's greatest golfers. Fantastic!
Golf Monthly
Number 7 course in UK and Ireland. Famously tough, can't think of a sterner - or fairer - test in the British Isles. Sperb layout, epic finish, fantastic test of golf, even for the very best.

Carnoustie Championship Golf Course is very, very, very hard but worth the slog. Defintely one of, if not the best links course in the whole of the UK. If you can score around Carnoustie Championship Golf Course you can play anywhere!

Carnoustie Championship Golf Courseis the toughest golf course I have played bar none! I played really well but still only just managed to break 80 on a reasonably calm day. Carnoustie Championship Golf Course is a classic links course with the burn and out of bounds challenging you all the way to the turn. Just when you think it can't get any tougher you come to the last 4 holes, which unless they are downwind, are just about the hardest finishing stretch anywhere in the world. Carnoustie Championship Golf Course is definitely one to play!

The Carnoustie Championship Golf Course is the best course I have played to date. Playing off a handicap of 16 at the time I played the course in windy and sunny conditions and I thought the course was brilliant, especially the last four holes. The spectacles I thought was a real test, as was the 6th, Hogan's Alley. I was lucky enough to win the Carnoustie Medal on that day with a nett 67 which was down to the Carnoustie Championship Golf Course's greens being the best I have ever played on, true to line.

Carnoustie Championship Golf Course is a world reknowned course that lives up to all the hype. It is as challenging as links courses come and still offers some amazingly attractive holes. The middle of the round is peppered with holes that can punish even a good shot. If you have time and money, Carnoustie Championship course is one of the course to play before you die.
