Wilson Golf is leading the way forward in low-compression golf balls by launching the Wilson Staff Px3 Soft Spin ball - a 3-piece golf ball with the world’s first zero compression core. The zero compression core inside the new ball fuels the softest feel of any golf ball on the market today, as well as a low spin-rate off the driver for straighter tee shots. The Wilson Staff Px3 Soft Spin ball is the lowest R&A/USGA approved compression golf ball, with an overall 50 compression rating. The end result for golfers is greater distance off the tee, super soft feel and added greenside control.“The theory behind the design of the new ball is that the higher the clubhead speed, the more effect the core and mantle have on the performance,” said Frank Simonutti, Manager of the Wilson Golf R&D team that specialises in golf balls. “As golfers get closer to the green, their swing speed slows and the performance is more affected by the cover of the ball. The core and mantle combination is designed for long distance and low spin, while the cover offers higher spin and more control the green.”The three layers of the Wilson Staff Px3 Soft Spin each have specific functions, yet work collectively to offer total performance from a golf ball. The zero compression core enhances feedback to the golfer at impact, while generating lower spin rate when struck with longer irons and woods for straighter ball flight. The DuPont HPF mantle, or speed layer around the core, causes a high velocity reaction at impact, resulting in greater distance. While the soft, pliable ionomer cover generates higher spin rates, allowing better control on short iron and approach shots, with great feel. A high-velocity Neodymium Catalyzed Polybutadiene is used to achieve the zero compression and provide premium resilience. Surrounding the core is the patented DuPont HPF mantle layer, initially developed as a potential replacement for a rubber core. This layer provides maximum initial velocity permitted off the club face, as well as allowing traditional components of the ball to be altered to achieve greater distance, enhanced feedback and appropriate spin rates. The soft, thin and pliable ionomer cover bites into the grooves of scoring clubs for greater spin, resulting in greater control and accuracy around the green. Like all Wilson Staff golf balls, the Px3 Soft Spin ball also features Wilson’s proprietary PhD (Pan Head Dimple) cover design. The large, shallow dimples (50% shallower than a standard dimple) promote a significantly higher launch to maximise flight. The sharp joints between the steep dimple walls and flat bottoms help maintain flight at lower speeds, while energizing the air flow around the ball. The result is reduced aerodynamic drag which translates into greater distance.

The Wilson Staff Px3 Soft Spin ball is the lowest approved compression golf ball, with an overall 50 compression rating. The Px3 also comes with the same dimple pattern as the Dx2. Compared to the Dx2, we found that the Wilson Staff Px3 golf ball is a little firmer around the green but will spin a little more on full pitch shots.
