Wilson Staff Di9 Steel Shaft Iron

The Wilson Staff Di9 iron is the next design from the manufacturer who have produced more irons than any other company in world golf, capturing a total of 61 major championships in the process. The Staff Di9 iron is a design driven by technology to deliver a combination of power and a softer feel that still maintains a longer distance. The Di9 boasts an increased hosel length to provide the club with a higher MOI and stabilises the head. The club’s sweet spot is expanded by the by the toe-friendly cavity that shifts the centre of gravity towards the outside of the head for increased forgiveness. The Staff Di9 is falso improved by inclusion of a soft urethane shock-trap in the heel that complements the Wide-Tip Technology shafts to minimise twisting on off-centre hits. The shaft is also the lightest ever wide-tip and at 99 grams ensures a higher club speed for greater distance. The Staff Di9 utilises an innovative distance gapping system that has a 3.5 degree loft strategy to ensure smooth gapping among the shorter irons (most clubs on the market have only a 2 degree gap between the longer irons with up to 6 degree variation in the short irons).

What Golfalot Says

One of the most welcome developments in the Di9’s is the re-introduction of the wide tip shaft technology that was used in the old Deep Red irons. Wilson claim to have improved it even more for the Di9’s by reducing the weight. This means the shaft still helps to cut twisting through the ball but in the Di9 it has been considerably reduced in weight so also helps to increase swing speed and generate extra power and distance.

The Di9’s clubhead features a low profile, wide sole design that promotes a higher and straighter ball flight as well as generating much higher ball speeds from the ultra responsive clubface. The end result is consistently better distance.

Studies show that almost 85 per cent of shots are hit from the centre to the toe of the club and the Di9’s feature a cavity that helps to extend the sweet spot out towards the toe. This means the sweet spot is larger than ever and the result is perhaps the most consistently accurate Wilson iron so far. The cavity itself is covered by a urethane insert that extends the sweet spot across the entire clubface and, as it gets wider at the heel, also helps reduce vibrations and increase feel.

In our tests we felt that the clubs very good and certainly inspired confidence at address. The cavity back in the head decreases in size as you go down through the set, although some may not like the protruding cavity that you can see on the 4 and 5 irons. The sand iron was a little chunky and more rectangular than normal, but it did the job pretty well. If it is not for you then the excellent Wilson Staff TW9 sand wedge could be swapped in.

Throughout the set the Di9s are easy to hit and this is particularly noticeable in the longer irons where you can achieve impressive distance and ball flight almost effortlessly. They are also very consistent on almost every shot, even on mishits, thanks to that wide tip shaft and forgiving head.

The Di9 irons feature a TrueTemper uniflex steel shaft that Wilson claim is suitable for players of all abilities and we would agree, unless you have a very high swing speed. They are also available with a new ProForce V2 graphite shaft with a softer tip for those golfers who need a bit more help getting the ball airborne.

Overall the Di9 irons certainly impressed us with their great performance and for mid to high handicappers we think that they represent one of the best value for money sets of irons in the market.

These irons are excellent value and perform very well. They're really easy to hit and the wide tip shafts that Wilson have been working on really seem to come into their own with the Di9's. I thought the ball travelled very well throught the set and even the longer irons were great fun to hit. I'd swap the wedges for a more specialist model but that aside I really can't find fault. And they're good couple of hundred quid cheaper than a lot of their main rivals so well worth the money for the excellent performance and huge potential for game improvement that they offer.

The new Di9's from Wilson were a real revelation for me as I had previously been sceptical of the Wide Tip shaft technology in previous Wilson sets. The Di9's however sit nicely behind the ball and gave a feeling of confidence at address. Forgiving throughout the set they provided a nice penetrating trajectory and when the large sweetspot was found the shots felt effortless. The only critiscism would be of the sand wedge which looked like it had been made for players who are afraid of hitting that club. If that is you then great but even if it is not I would seriously recommend these irons to mid handicappers who are serious about improving their games.
