Wilson D-FY Iron

The Wilson D-FY iron combo set is a technology driven iron set aimed at the fasting growing market in today’s market place. These golfers in the game improvement category with low to mid swing speeds benefit from the iron/hybrid combination and the revolutionary design of the D-FY delivers both increased distance whilst maintaining the performance and precision vital for improving golfers.

The eight piece Wilson D-FY set is the perfect marriage of distance iron technology and the precise distance technology of the company’s Fybrid technology. The Wilson D-FY set comprises a 19.5 degree Fybrid Utility and a 4 hybrid club to maximise distance and forgiveness in the longer shots. The 5 and 6 mid irons feature super wide soles and the hollow core design maximises playability, whilst the set is finished off with perimeter weighted cavity backed clubs from 7 iron to pitching wedge to ensure the player benefits from maximum forgiveness in the scoring zone.

Wilson have also focussed on the engine of the club with the D-FY boasting new patent pending shaft technology with the co-cured Half and Half shaft. Made of half steel and half graphite the Half and Half is the first shaft of its kind and combines the benefit of both materials to deliver an iron power and precision. The Half and Half shaft is exceptionally low torque and thanks to the graphite section weighs only 76 grams. The D-FY irons from Wilson golf have harnessed the latest in golf technology to deliver the best in game improvement performance.

What Golfalot Says

The Wilson D-FY iron combo set is an ideal set make up for high handicappers or those with a below average swing speed. The major feature is the half graphite and half steel shafts which combine the lightness of graphite with the tip stabilty of steel. This makes the shaft very light but it still provides good feel and really makes it easy to get the ball in the air. The 19.5 degree Fy wood and 4 hybrid are a bit like chunky fairway woods, in a nice way, and the tall face give you lots of forgiveness and confidence. Compared to the regular Fybrids, the D-FY versions have a slightly heavier sole with couple of rails on the bottom and this helps get the head through bad lies and providers a little extra momentum.

The D-FY mid irons looked a little chuncky with their semi-wood styling, but the short irons were more traditional and were lovely to hit. Again the irons hit the ball a little higher than your average irons, so if you have trouble getting the ball airbourne then this is the set for you.

Chunky and clunky but unbelievable to hit. Welcome to the strange world of the Wilson D-FY Iron. The first thing you notice are the shafts which feature both graphite and steel giving you a best-of-both-worlds combination that is perfect for game improvement irons.

I personally thought that the hybrids were a bit underwhelming. There is nothing wrong with them and they’re perfectly adequate as part of a set. They’re big but they’re very forgiving and get the ball up there and out there but they lack a certain X-factor.

The irons are also big – although I’ve certainly seen worse looking improvement irons at address – but they actually seem very light and will certainly suit the slower swing speeds of the higher handicappers. It seems difficult to hit these badly and you can’t wish for anything else from a game improvement iron. The longers irons are a bit hybrid like but if you want a guarantee of performance then the D-FY’s might be your answer.
