Whitlam Jules Putter

The Whitlam Jules putter is a heel shafted putter boasting a traditional design and a CNC milled aluminium insert within a 303 stainless steel clubhead. The inclusion of this ‘Alu-inser’ technology has allowed the weight of the Jules golf putter to be redistributed to aid balance and improve the overall feel of the putter. Stability is provided by Whitlam’s excellent periphery weighting design.

In common with each Whitlam putter the Jules has been designed by David Whitlam, one of the best putter designers working in golf, and has been the beneficiary of the 15 step finishing process that makes each Whitlam putter so exceptional.

After hearing about Whitlam Golf from a colleague in the USA, I decided to dive in and purchase a Whitlam Jules putter. The heel shafted, mallet style putter comes complete with the latest in ‘Aluinser' technology, an aluminium insert positioned towards the back of the head. This insert allows weight redistribution, which helps to improve the overall balance of the putter. The most noticeable feature is the crispness of the strike, therefore relaying instant feedback about the quality of each putt. Furthermore the combined effect of the weight redistribution and CNC milled face is to promote a more positive stroke, ideal for clinching those nerve-wracking 6 footers.

The Jules putter sits well behind the ball, with the single line acting as an appropriate alignment aid, in keeping with the sleek design. Additionally, the reasonably heavy head helps to instil extra control over long putts, with a consistent roll and feel. The dew of early spring mornings has proven to be a great acid test for the roll, with the trail demonstrating an almost perfect roll straight from the clubface with very little skidding. The periphery weighting system helps to develop the stability, imparting topspin for a more accurate putt. The solid feel on impact allows the putter to perform to just as well through all of the seasons, unlike many of the softer feeling putters which prove almost useless when the greens show the spongy texture associated with spring and early summer. My only concern would be the level of control on glass-like greens, although I would imagine an hour or so on the practice green would be the perfect solution to this slight niggle. Overall, the Jules putter is a really well balanced putter, producing a crisp, accurate strike at a reasonable price.
